In 1998, Dr. Prof. Subhash Gupta joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and established the Liver Transplant Program there. The first deceased donor liver transplantation was performed in the Hepatology Department in 2001 in collaboration with Dr. Shantanu Nundy. Later, they started performing living donor liver transplants, which are the most common type of liver transplant, along with Dr. Nundy. After a slow start, the liver transplant program boomed in 2006 with 66 liver transplants performed. Dr. Gupta pioneered the development of living-donor liver transplantation in India, which eliminated the need for patients to travel abroad for this treatment. Patients from India, Africa, the Middle East and the Far East can now undergo liver transplantation surgeries thanks to its surgical techniques which have greatly reduced the expenses as compared to other places.

Complementing surgical methods, the center uses advanced radiological techniques such as stent placement, thermo-osmosis and percutaneous alcohol injections into tumor tissues.

In addition to treating patients from the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, the center also caters to patients from all over India. The facility has extensive experience in managing all aspects of surgical pancreatitis, with the exception of malignancies. Renowned consultants, both nationally and internationally, serve as faculty members at the Centre.

The adage “Treat the patient, not the disease” remains the guiding philosophy on which Dr. Gupta continues to train his team at the center.

In the field of liver transplantation, the center continues to make giant strides not only in clinical care, but also leads surgical innovations in this specialty, trains junior physicians in this elite specialty and ensures that physicians in the community become proficient in treating transplant patients in the community.

Primarily as a gastrointestinal surgeon, Dr. Prof. Subhash Gupta continues to treat a large number of patients suffering from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and problems of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas. Liver resections, pancreatic surgery, hydatid cyst and cholecystectomy as well as biliary tract injury surgery are performed regularly at our center.

While the Hepatobiliary Sciences team continues to excel, Dr. Gupta remains a clinician at heart. Ensures that he sees all patients personally, leads the surgical team during operations, and remains directly responsible for postoperative care.

Meticulous attention to detail, both inside the operating room and out on the ward/ICU, is perhaps the single most important reason behind the excellence in clinical care that Dr. Gupta and his team continue to deliver at the Center.

Dr. Prof. Subhash Gupta did FRCS in Edinburgh and Glasgow during his time in the UK. He has written extensively on a variety of topics related to liver transplantation from living donors, including the need for appropriate CMV prophylaxis and liver transplantation without hepatitis B immunoglobulin prophylaxis.

He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Queensland, Australia. He was awarded the title of Professor of Liver Transplantation from the Institute of Graduate Studies and Medical Research, Kolkata. He was awarded Gold Medal by Delhi Medical Association in 2005 and delivered the annual sermon at JIPMER Scientific Society in Puducherry in 2011. In addition, he is serving as Central Government candidate on the Governing Council of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Mumbai.

He led the team that developed standardized recommendations for the management of liver disorders and liver transplantation in India with the help of the Ministry of Health and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). This work helps establish appropriate standards of care for chronic liver disease and acute liver failure and will help identify insurance claims.

    Personal Information

Prof. Subhash Gupta received his medical education at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, where he obtained his medical degree. He also received general surgery training at the same institute before joining as a Senior Resident in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Experimental Liver Transplantation.

With the encouragement of Professor Samiran Nundy, Dr. Gupta went to the UK to get training in liver transplantation. He trained at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and St James’s University Hospital, Leeds between 1993 and 1998, working in close collaboration with pioneers of liver transplantation such as Paul McMaster, Elwyn Elias and James Neuberger.

During his stay in the UK, Dr. Gupta qualified for grants from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Trained in all aspects of liver transplantation, actively involved in clinical work and research, as well as training junior physicians. His research work has been published in various journals and presented in many conferences around the world, which has earned him recognition for his contributions.

In 1998, Dr. Subhash Gupta decided to return to India and take up the challenge of setting up a liver transplant program in this part of the world. He was offered the position of Consultant Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, and prior to this offer there, he played a key role in developing the first successful liver transplant program in India. While he trained in liver transplantation for an extended period in the UK, he also visited many centers in Seoul and Japan to understand the developments that made living donor liver transplantation a rapidly successful procedure outside the Western world.

The Liver Transplant Program at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was the result of years of preparation, with significant contributions from Dr. Subhash Gupta and his colleagues, and the encouraging results showed that the program was launched successfully and with confidence! After the initial years at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and later at Apollo Hospital, Dr. Subhash Gupta decided that Max Super Specialty Hospital in Saket was better equipped to provide the necessary infrastructure to sustain a liver transplant programme.

Over the years, the Center for Liver and Biliary Sciences at Max has grown into what it is today and is today one of the busiest liver transplantation programs in the world. But Dr. Gupta prides himself on the fact that liver transplantation is only a small part of the range of activities the center is involved in. In addition to being a liver transplant surgeon, he believes strongly that there are cases that will necessarily require a liver transplant. Dr. Subhash Gupta continues to treat a large number of patients suffering from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary tract and pancreas. The center regularly performs liver resection surgeries, pancreas surgery, cholecystectomy, biliary tract surgery, and more.

While the Hepatobiliary Sciences team continues to excel, Dr. Gupta remains a cardiothoracic surgeon. He personally ensures that he monitors all patients, leads the surgical team during operations, and has direct responsibility for postoperative care.

Meticulous attention to detail both within the operating room and in the intensive care unit is a key factor contributing to the excellent clinical care provided by Dr. Gupta and his team at the centre.

In 2017, Dr. Subhash Gupta joined Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, and established the Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Sciences Program there.
